Combining contemporary music with traditional favourites
Betteshanger Colliery Welfare Band based in Deal. A brass band with along history of music-making. Being close to the former Royal Marines School of Music, many of the musicians have that heritage. Their web site doesn’t seem to be working so this link takes you to their Facebook page. Snowdown Colliery Band is also very close to Deal/Dover and has history dating back to 1926 through the Kent coalfields. They were the SCABA Band of the Year in 2011. Cantium Brass Band can boast history back to 1886 and are based in Chartham Hatch, near the historic City of Canterbury. Their conductor/Director of Music is a former Royal Marines Warrant Officer Bandmaster. The Broadstairs & St Peters Concert Band Again, it is conducted by a former Royal Marines musician and has several ex RMB members. The Sandwich Concert Band was formed in 2011 from members of the former Pfizer Wind Orchestra; a group which now performs in St. Mary’s Arts Centre in Sandwich. The Deal Memorial Bandstand is located on Walmer Green near Deal. It is a memorial to the 11 musicians killed when the Royal Marines Barracks was bombed on 22nd September 1989. Eleven sides of the twelve-sided structure have engraved tablets bearing the names of those that lost their lives. Concerts are performed on Sunday afternoons from May to September, commencing at 2.30pm. The concerts are free, as are chairs and programmes, although they do hold a collection and sell raffle tickets. The dates of this years concert can be found on this web site including the fabulous concert by the Band of HM Royal Marines in July that attracts a vast audience of several thousands of people. The Deal Festival of Music and Arts is an annual event that offers much more than just concerts; education plays a major part and concerts are not confined to Deal but neighbouring towns and villages too. The Railway Swing Band is a BIG big band in both senses of the word having up to 18 saxophones and eight trumpets. The band plays all the popular music of the big band era plus more modern arrangements. It performs up to fifteen concerts annually, all for charitable organisations. The International Horn Society dedicated to the world of French Horns. Its President is Frank Lloyd, another former Royal Marines musician.
